¡Protégete!…¡Ciudadanía Ya!, is an historic community-based campaign that will educate and motivate the more than 755,000 eligible legal permanent residents (LPRs) in Los Angeles County to apply for citizenship. Born out of Mayor Eric Garcetti’s Step Forward LA initiative, the campaign brings together a multi-sector coalition of the region’s most prominent immigrant rights organizations, local elected officials, philanthropic organizations and Spanish-language media companies. The coalition will mount a coordinated effort to inform eligible LPRs about the process, and expand access to trustworthy naturalization services in every corner of the region.
The coalition leading the campaign is co-chaired by Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti and Los Angeles County Supervisor Hilda Solis, Congressman Xavier Becerra, and Long Beach Mayor Robert Garcia. Coalition members include the National Association of Latino Elected Officials (NALEO) Educational Fund, the Central American Resource Center (CARECEN), the Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights of Los Angeles (CHIRLA), the Council of Mexican Federations (COFEM), and Asian Americans Advancing Justice Los Angeles (AAAJ-LA).
Media partners include: Azteca America, Entravision, Estrella TV/Liberman Broadcasting, La Opinión, KVEA 52 Telemundo, Univision Radio, and KMEX 34 Univision TV. They have come together for the first time to promote an issue with a unified message. The organizations will coordinate community outreach and provide services to eligible LPRs.
